Stanisław Wyspiański ( 1869-1907) – Cracovian painter, architect, poet, playwright, interior decorator and furniture designer, co-founder of the Society of Polish Artists Sztuka (Art), author of several brilliant symbolist dramas including Wesele (The Wedding) and Wyzwolenie (Liberation), and one of the greatest representatives of Polish modernism (Young Poland). His overwhelming body of work comprises portraits, landscapes, polychromes, stained- glass windows, and even furniture, but he is predominantly known for his atmospheric portraits in pastels such as Motherhood, A Portrait of Józio Feldman, or Self-Portrait with Wife, all of which are among the best-recognized images in Polish art. The Album features over 50 works by Wyspiański from the collection of the National Museum in Cracow, providing a synthesis of the artist’s painting techniques from watercolour and pastel to oil painting.
