Henryk Siemiradzki (1843–1902) – an eminent representative of academic art and graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Saint Petersburg. The artist’s paintings won him multiple awards. He also visited Poland a lot. His donation of the painting Nero’s Torches gave rise to the National Museum in Kraków. His works stand out thanks to their stunning, almost stage-like sceneries, beautiful landscapes, multiple decorative effects (sculptures, outfits, flowers and jewellery), perfectly reflected in such pieces as The Sword Dance or Christian Dirce. Idyllic scenes from the life of ancient Romans dazzle with their colour palette and chiaroscuro, which we can observe in the paintings Roman Idyll, Before Bath or Searching for Arcadia.
