The artist featured in another mini-album in the Painting series is Maksymilian Gierymski (1846–1874) – a painter and draughtsman, an insurgent in the January Uprising, elder brother of Aleksander – a painter like himself. He represented the so-called Munich School and gave rise to realist landscape painting. Initially, he learned his skills in the Drawing Class, and then under the eye of another prominent artist, Juliusz Kossak. In 1867, he travelled to Munich, where he started a course at the Academy of Fine Arts. Over time, the artist developed a peculiar painting style, and his works – rather cold-shouldered in Poland – were received with enthusiasm e.g. in London, Vienna, Berlin, and Hamburg. The introduction and selection of illustrations for the album were prepared by Aleksandra Krypczyk-De Barra, PhD.
