Stefan Norblin, full name: Juliusz Stefan Norblin de la Gourdaine (1892–1952), great-grandson of Jean Pierre Norblin, a French painter from the turn of the 19th century. A highly talented, versatile artist, referred to as the painter of maharajahs, in the interwar period was very successful in Poland both as a graphic artist and designer. After the outbreak of World War II, he left his homeland and got to Iraq, where he painted portraits of the royal family. But his painting career only skyrocketed in India, where he won popularity and respect. It was there that he created exquisite paintings in maharajahs’ palaces and aristocratic mansions. He was inspired by Hindu religious motifs, which he presented in contemporary forms with rich colours and a multitude of decorative items, combining European Art Nouveau and Hindu traditions.
