Tamara de Lempicka (1898–1980) is the world’s most famous Polish female artist. Her paintings rank among the best-sellers and are purchased for staggering prices at auctions. The queen of art déco was born into a wealthy, influential family. From early childhood she was interested in art, which was her frequent companion. The elegant, witty provocateur created a sensation in Paris with her portraits of luminous, vibrant colours with clear shadows and unusual styling. Tamara in a Green Bugatti, Portrait of Ira Perrot, Andromeda, and Woman with a Dove come from this period. Particularly noteworthy in de Lempicka’s art are her nudes. One such example is La Belle Rafaela, an art déco masterpiece, which reflects the model’s sensuality and accentuates her carnality.
