Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) is one of the few painters whose works have left such a huge mark on the 20th-century art. Underestimated and unknown to many during his lifetime, he became famous and appreciated only after his premature death. Nowadays, his paintings, such as Sunflowers or Starry Night are among the best known and most expensive in the world. Vincent van Gogh painted mostly portraits and landscapes inspired by farming and nature. Periods or his artistic activity were interrupted by several nervous breakdowns. In search of his calling and place in the world, the artist worked as an art dealer in London and Paris, was a missionary in Belgium, and studied painting in Antwerp. However, he did not win his teachers’ approval. He left for Arles, Provence, where he devoted himself completely to painting. Next, he moved to Auvers, where he created a number of his famous works, e.g. the Portrait of Dr. Gachet. That seemingly happy period of his life ended with the artist’s death caused by gunshot complications.
