Edgar Degas was a painter, graphic artist, and sculptor. He made a name for himself as an impressionist, although not all of his works follow this trend. At first fascinated with historical painting, he then abandoned it and turned to images of ballerinas and dancing women, which are his trademark today. He also often painted horses, because they enabled him to depict motion on canvas. He was not thoroughly an impressionist, as his paintings manifested traces of realism. His desire was to capture and show the ephemeral. He was not so much into colours – so crucial to impressionism – as into portraying and capturing movement.
