Caravaggio. World Painting

Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio is considered one of the most outstanding baroque artists ever. His art revolutionised the existing painting with the introduction of chiaroscuro, which emphasised the drama and realism of the representations. The artist intentionally abandoned the cult of beauty pervading the contemporary painting, and instead highlighted the imperfections of the figures in his works.

At first, his style was met with indignation, but over time that turned into a fascination, which made the artist incredibly famous. The composition of paintings and their theatrical style drew attention to the foreground figures, hiding the details in darkness and giving rise to speculation. The painter’s venturesome nature did not prevent him from creating magnificent religious scenes, such as The Supper at Emmaus, The Martyrdom of Saint Matthew and The Calling of Saint Matthew.
