Francisco de Goya y Lucientes (1746–1828) is among the most prominent Spanish artists and one of the greatest artists of the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. He was an extremely prolific artist. He created over 2,000 paintings, graphic designs and drawings. Goya’s most typical works are portraits, which he produced while he was the court painter for the king, and a series of the so-called Black Paintings created after he recovered from a serious illness.

He created over 2,000 paintings, graphic designs and drawings. Goya’s most typical works are portraits, which he produced while he was the court painter for the king, and a series of the so-called Black Paintings created after he recovered from a serious illness. The scope of his subjects was unusually wide. Apart from portraits, he also painted genre scenes, religious paintings and still lifes. But the trademark of this exceptional artist became historical painting, depicting the affliction, suffering, and heroic struggle referring to tragic events in the history of Spain.
