Anthony van Dyck is – like Peter Paul Rubens and Jacob Jordaens – among the most prominent artists of the golden age of Flemish painting. An outstanding portraitist, he was one of the most talented and accomplished students of Rubens. After leaving the master’s workshop, he developed an individual style, which made a huge impact on future portrait painting. The right colours and background made the portraits seem more majestic and sophisticated, and the people they presented looked more dignified and elegant. Anthony van Dyck was tightly connected to the English royal court and was knighted as the court painter of Charles I.
