Rafael Santi, along with Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, is one of the main representatives of the Italian Renaissance. He was an extremely talented artist. Already as a child, he learned to paint, first under his father’s eye, then Pietro Perugino’s, whose style he followed at the beginning of his own career. Santi’s art is characterised by numerous representations of the Madonna, of which the most famous is the Sistine Madonna. Santi often equipped the figures in his paintings with the faces of well-known and respected individuals. In the fresco The School of Athens, Plato has the face of Leonardo da Vinci, and Heraclitus – of Michelangelo. The artist placed his self-portrait on the right side of the painting. Santi was a very religious man, he was friends with humanists and was hailed a genius during his lifetime.
