The fifth album in our popular FOTO RETRO series focuses on Warsaw in the last decade of the Polish People’s Republic before the fall of communism. The end of the communism era was heavily marked by the ever-deepening economic crisis and brought no new construction projects or road infrastructure in the Polish capital. The drabness of everyday existence transpires through the photographs, yet, at the same time, Warsaw in the 80s became witness to many crucial political events which were to change Polish history forever: the “Solidarity” Uprising, Pope John Paul II’s subsequent visits to his homeland, and finally, the ultimate fall of communism in 1989. The majority of the photographs have been made available courtesy of the National Digital Archive. With foreword by actress Joanna Szczepkowska.
