The third and last part of the “black trilogy” by Bartłomiej G. Sala. The book portrays creatures, which – according to alchemists’ notes, historical sources, public opinion, and literature and film classics – were made by men by means of magic, alchemical practices, or scientific experiments. Creatures which more or less draw upon the myth of Prometheus. Apart from beings intentionally brought to life by people, there are also those that were created accidentally, for example by ignorantly murmuring a magic formula or initiating some cause-and-effect process. In this way, life was supposedly breathed, among others, into Egyptian mummies waking up from their eternal sleep. The book also covers living things that were not created but mutated by people. This is how the hideous Mr Edward Hyde or the Invisible Man came to life. Each chapter is devoted to another creature or group of creatures. The chapters are ordered chronologically starting from the oldest mentions of the figures, although the stories then develop more or less concurrently.
The book is great for those who would like to find out about “monstrous” places, are eager to learn about cultural traditions inscribed in ancient imagined stories, and want to discover classical literary or cinematic works
