This richly illustrated book by Alina Kręcisz provides several accounts from a journey to the island of Sri Lanka, following the footsteps of famous individuals from the turn of the 20th century — Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz and Bronisław Malinowski. Upon a careful study of the written records of both travellers, the author decided to revisit Sri Lanka in order to recreate the trip from over a century ago. Modern descriptions of the Sri Lankan sites and customs are accompanied by numerous quotes, e.g. from Witkacy’s articles for “Echo Tatrzańskie” and Malinowski’s journal, showing the transitions of such places as Colombo, Kandy, Matale and Anuradhapura, as well as the means of local and long-distance transportation. The detailed account, illustrated with dozens of old and recent photographs and reproductions of Witkacy’s and Julian Fałat’s works, enables the readers to embark on a literary journey to Hindu and Buddhist temples or Sri Lankan gardens and reserves, encouraging them to visit the distant, yet charming Asian country. It is a great read for all fans of far-away journeys and enthusiasts of Witkacy’s art and Bronisław Malinowski’s achievements.
