Poland. Essays on the Centenary is a book published on the one hundredth anniversary of Poland’s independence celebrated in 2018. It has been inspired by the illustrated luxury album “Poland 100 Years” and is a summa of 39 essays written by the most outstanding representatives of Polish universities and academic centres, e.g. Marek Belka, Adam D. Rotfeld, Andrzej Chwalba, Andrzej Friszke, Jan Miodek, Krystyna Skarżyńska, Janusz H. Skalski, Tadeusz Lubelski, Jarosław Włodarczyk, Witold Orłowski, and Ryszard Bugaj. The main part is preceded by a historical and cultural preface by Prof. Michał Kleiber.
The authors discuss the emergence and development of the central aspects of the Polish nation: the complex and difficult history of Poland, its sovereignty and gradual transformation (political and economic changes), social relations and identity, religion, education, healthcare, literature and culture, including music, film, fine arts, and architecture. The book also presents the development of technical, natural, and medical sciences.
The concept of the illustrated album and this publication was developed by the Program Council appointed through a social initiative, including Professors Michał Kleiber, Andrzej Mencwel, Henryk Samsonowicz, Jerzy Bralczyk, and eminent experts on Polish culture: the writer, Wiesław Myśliwski, the director of the Grand Theatre (National Opera), Waldemar Dąbrowski, or the Polish diplomat, expert on international relations, Prof. Adam D. Rotfeld.
