Agnieszka Taborska’s book, Devil and Company, develops themes found in Polish legends in a witty and poetic way, providing a surprising interpretation of Polish folklore. It rewrites Slavic fairy tales, adjusting them to the sensibility of modern readers.

Aimed at children and adults alike, this unique book consists of fifteen stories beautifully illustrated, with the first and last one forming a sort of a frame. Thanks to an attractive and original approach to folklore and tradition, it combines fun with education. Focused on various regions of Poland, it emphasizes their cultural diversity.

Agnieszka Taborska is an accomplished author of four volumes of prose (The Dreaming Life of Leonora de la Cruz; Whale, or Objective Chance; Not Like in Paradise; The Unfinished Life of Phoebe Hicks). She also wrote Topor’s Alphabet; a collection of reportages titled American Crumbs; and Conspirators of Imagination, one of the major Polish books on Surrealism. Taborska is also the author of seven books for children, illustrated by famous Polish artists and published in Poland, Germany Japan and Korea (among them The Crazy Clock; Fisherman at the Bottom of the Sea; Moon Spirits; Rhinoceros’ Blues; Black Mountain). Her books have won literary prizes in Germany and were adapted to screen in the form of animated films.

Devil and Company is illustrated and designed by world-famous artist Professor Lech Majewski. The combination of the very innovative text based on classical fairy tales with illustrations inspired by Polish folk art is a successful and pleasurable revitalization of these valuable stories.
