Zdzisław Beksiński was an artist whose entire life was subjected to his artistic activity, which was not limited to fine arts only. Art was his “form of existence”. This book is an unprecedented take on this art subdued by the fear of being. It revolves obsessively around the issues that interested 20th-century existentialists – anxiety, despair, death, passing, searching for the meaning of existence. It is an attempt at an existential-philosophy perspective on the rich artistic output of Zdzisław Beksiński – an artist, whose works are an interesting phenomenon in modern Polish art. Undeniably, his art was autonomous and – despite countless disfigurements and formal transformations – it remains uniform and coherent in terms of content. From the beginning to the end, thoroughly identified with the author, it emanates a peculiar ambiance and mood, always speaks about what is most deeply hidden – loneliness, suffering, fear of death of an individual embroiled with the tragedy of human existence.
