The Stare Powązki (Old Powązki) Cemetery in Warsaw is like a magnificent album of national memory. It is there that were laid to rest the most eminent Polish artists, writers, scientists, statesmen, industrialists, and those who gave their lives for Poland’ s freedom. A walk in the cemetery alleys among masterpieces of sepulchral art is a history lesson in itself, written down in tomb epitaphs and inscriptions. The album features photographs of poignant memorial monuments and sculptures, often created or designed by famous artists. It also tells the story of the cemetery and the Citizens’ Committee for the Protection of Old Powązki, an organization which has undertaken the noble task of salvaging the necropolis’ treasures of material culture.
