The book is dedicated to most significant phenomena and art movements which shaped Polish art during the 40 years under communist rule. It focuses on the „creative process” in the context of communist reality – when artists had to face the demands of socialist realism, fight censorship and find ways to overcome the restrictions of the opressive system by engaging in anti-communist activity or by boycotting the government-imposed ideological programme. Each chapter fouses on a different artistic trend and phenomenon, showcasing the works most representative of the genre and time: art in World War II, architecture of the socialist realism, „Cracow school of graphics”, „Polish school of poster”, statuary sculpture, murals and neons, applied art and design, „Polish school of weaving”, etc. Photographs of selected works come from private and state collections and galleries. The album is a must-have for artists and all art lovers who would like to better understand the reality of the times in which the „PRL art” was created.
