The phenomenon of highway robbery as a part of the Carpathian folklore has fascinated many for years. This book features 37 most (in)famous head bandits (harnaś in Polish) who operated in the Carpathian Mountains from the 16th until the 19th century, some of them brazenly venturing as far as Moravia, Silesia, Podole or even Cracow and Przemyśl.

The book combines nearly 90 folk tales passed on orally from generation to generation, with historical facts, actual biographies of the bandits, and even court reports, to the effect of revealing the truth about the mountain robbers, sometimes very different from their Robin Hood-esque, larger-than-life images (they were often believed to posses magic powers and weapons) functioning in popular culture; a separate chapter is dedicated to bandits who had been brought into being purely by folk fancy, but never actually existed. Beside such well-known figures as Janosik, Ondraszek, Oleksy Dobosz and Józef Baczyński we encounter an array of Ruthenian, Hutsul, Hungarian, but also Gypsy and Jewish bandits, which proves yet again how culturally diverse the Carpathians have always been. These fascinating stories are accompanied by outstanding drawings by Witold Vargas and Paweł Zych, famous for their works in the folk and fantasy genres.
