2014 saw the 40th anniversary of the screen premiere of The Deluge, the cinematographic masterpiece directed by Jerzy Hoffman and one of the most popular and beloved pictures in the history of Polish cinema. Since its debut in1974 nearly 30 million viewers have watched the historical epic based on the eponymous novel by Nobel Prize laureate Henryk Sienkiewicz. The film’s greatest achievement was getting shortlisted for the Oscars 1974. The scope of the production, the riveting, unforgettable performances by all actors, masterful cinematography by Jerzy Wójcik, exquisite production design and costumes, and, last but not least, the gripping plot, with its central characters of Kmicic and Oleńka, set against the backdrop of the 17th century Poland - all this makes The Deluge one of the most popular Polish films of all time. Digitally remastered in 2014 at the initiative of Filmoteka Narodowa (National Film Archive), the picture is now available on DVD in its slightly abbreviated version titled Potop Redivivus (The Deluge Revived), along with a book of the same title documenting the filming process in the 1970s. The album contains over 350 photographs – some never published before - selected out of nearly 2000 still and candid shots taken on location, as well as original costume design drawings, Polish and foreign The Deluge posters, satirical cartoons, texts by renown Polish and international film critics, and interviews with Jerzy Hoffman, Jerzy Wójcik and actors Daniel Olbrychski, Leszek Teleszyński and other members of the film crew. The Potop Redivivus album is a true collectors’ gem for the fans of the film itself and for cinema history buffs alike.
Co-funding for the poject has been provided by the Polish Film Institute.
