“Devil Knows” is a continuation of “Devil and Company”, which was presented with the 2014 Best Polish Book for Children Award at the Children’s Literature Festival. It was created by a collaborating duet: a famous author of literature for children and adults, Agnieszka Taborska, and an accomplished illustrator and designer, Lech Majewski. With references to Polish folk culture and legends, Devil Knows takes a twisted approach to presenting the Devil as a destroyer of order. In this case, Devils restore order. A short chapter is devoted to each of the thirteen Devils living in Poland. They protect specific places (Devil of Lesser Poland, Pomerania, Warsaw, Kraków, Łowicz, Bydgoszcz or Podhale), or take care of national issues (Devil of Offices, Ecology, Nighttime, Meteorology, Mushrooms, and Animals). Using a funny, often surprising story, the author makes the readers sensitive to vital problems: pollution, animal abuse, or road-hogging. The text is written with the warmth and optimism known from other books by Agnieszka Taborska. Lech Majewski’s illustrations perfectly draw upon the humorous text. Young readers learn that by helping the Devils, they can make the world a better place. Recommended to anyone from 6 to 100 years old.
