The album features a collection of literary renditions of folk tales and legends associated with thirty most interesting old castles dotting the Sudeten Mountains, such as the strongholds in Prudnik, Ząbkowice Śląskie, Gniewoszów, Zagórz Śląski, Bolków or Czocha in Leśna. Situated on forbidding mountain slopes and peaks, but also in picturesque valleys, some of the castles have stood the test of time, while others have crumbled into ruin. The author, ethnographer and historian Bartłomiej Grzegorz Sala provides a short history of each castle, following the dry facts with vibrant folk legends inhabited by ghosts and apparitions, saints and devils, cruel masters and brave youths, passionate lovers and ruthless highwaymen. The stories are accompanied by his informed commentary which helps set the folk motifs and beliefs in their cultural context and adds to the educational value of the text without affecting its literary merits.
