Barely three weeks after the tragic events of the May Coup, on 1 June 1926, the National Assembly appointed Ignacy Mościcki as President of the Republic of Poland. A former member of the Polish Socialist Party and Józef Piłsudski’s brother-in-arms, conspirator, and even would-be terrorist, an eminent chemist and organiser of the chemical industry in independent Poland, he was completely loyal to the Marshal. Unlike his predecessor in the highest office, Stanisław Wojciechowski, Mościcki enjoyed publicity and press exposure, travelled a lot across Poland, gladly received foreign diplomats, and organised New Year’s parties in the Royal Castle. He was lucky to have met good photographers, which is evident in the selection of nearly 200 pictures documenting his life and service. Ignacy Mościcki was president for thirteen years. His second term was only interrupted by the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939.
