On 16 January 2019, we celebrated the centennial of the appointment of the eminent Polish pianist and composer, Ignacy Jan Paderewski, as the prime minister of the independent Republic of Poland. Chief of State Józef Piłsudski made that decision before the beginning of the Versailles Peace Conference. He wanted the reviving country to be represented by a well-known person enjoying worldwide respect, with wide international connections at the highest level. Paderewski’s services to Polish independence, in particular in the US, his unusual position and popularity as a piano virtuoso could not be overestimated. At that time, Paderewski was the most popular Polish name in the world.
