“Fear to Be Afraid” by Professor Jerzy Bralczyk is another richly-illustrated lexicon, this time dedicated to words and expressions of fear. From A to Z, the author presents a number of conditions, phenomena, actions, diseases, but also animals and figures, which have frightened humanity since the beginning of time. The stories, teeming with linguistic curiosities – though giving you goosebumps – come with a decent dose of (black) humour. It is a wonderful source of knowledge for all enthusiasts of the Polish language, and horror films and stories. Last but not least, the terrifying text is accompanied by just as scary illustrations of human fears by the most outstanding European painters, e.g. Rembrandt and Goya.
