1989 was a breakthrough year in Poland’s history. Chris Niedenthal , one of the best-known European photographers, was able to capture that great change, the decline and ultimate fall of communism in Poland, with masterly insight and irony. The album is a reportage in which trivial, every day moments are juxtaposed – sometimes straightforwardly , but most of the time very subtly – with history happening there and then. Communism was a difficult and complicated time in Poland, with all areas of life - including art - being  controlled by the regime. Photography was one of the few means of expression available through which artists were able to capture and comment on reality, without actually saying a word.
